Midnight
first appeared in 1955. It was a cracker box hull powered by a
flathead V8, and raced out of the Mangakino Powerboat Club by
Joe Mathieson (Dad).
The second Midnight appeared in 1960 (so did Steve), a "flattie"
and powered by an early side plate Holden, again racing out of
Mangakino for the next few years. Joe raced this boat until 1974
when he retired.
At this stage there was another boat in the family, Meridian,
which brothers Tony & Terry owned and raced. This boat, also
a flattie, was powered by a Humber 80.
"More speed" was the call, maybe a Hydro was the way
to go. A cabover hydro was bought and a twin cam Lotus was set
up by Joe, Terry, Tony & Steve. This boat was also called
Meridian and raced by the 3 sons until 1981.
In 1998 a cabover hydro was purchased, the result being the 3rd
Midnight owned by Karyn & Steve. After a very long winter
the boat appeared powered by a Nissan SR20 2 litre engine. It
surprised everyone with the results that the team achieved, but
that call was heard again, "More speed".
In 2000 a new engine (another SR20) with some "go fast"
bits was purchased and installed. This increased the speed yet
again.
Since then a number of small changes have been made, including
some minor hull improvements, different propellors, shifting weight,
and improving drive lines to name a few. All in the name of "more
speed". |
