2014 Kaniere Regatta Entry Form

23rd March 2014 - Goldcup Regatta

MTF Goldcup
1st Sam Hughes "Unfinished Business"
2nd Adam Parker "Heat Seeker"
3rd Grant Pedder "Bavarian"
4th Steve Mathieson "Midnight"
15 Boats had entered the Goldcup but only 5 boats started in the final as mistakes and breakdowns took care of the rest. There was drama at the first turn with Wasted Nights, Bavarian and Heat Seeker all running hard into turn one and and Heat Seeker and Wasted nights collided with each other causing damage and a retirement to Wasted Nights. In the restart Sam Hughes took the lead and never looked back, Heat Seeker held off Bavarian and Midnight came home forth.

Composting New Zealand Sally Nagel Cup
1st Rory Anthony "Boost"
2nd Alan Steiner "Misty Blue"
3rd Steve Mathieson "Midnight"
First lap was great with Alan Steiner in Misty Blue putting pressure on Boost and taking an early lead but the Turbo in Boost mangaed to over come Misty blues better turning speed and took the win. Steve Mathieson couldnt match Misty Blues turning and had to settle for 3rd.

First Commercial Bob Dunlop Memorial
1st Kent Dum
lop "Razors Edge"
2nd Richard Smith "Balistic"
3rd Evan White "Wasted Nights"
Raced on the short course Balistic managed to keep up with Razors Edge for a lap before gradually Razors Edge pulled away. Evan White drove a great race to beat home Adam Parker in Heat Seeker.

Plumbing Solutions Ross Knight Memorial

1st Rory Anthony "Boost"
2nd Steve Mathieson "Midnight"
3rd Brenden Hall "Armageddon"
Boost took the lead and never looked back this boat was humming all weekend and really goes great. Steve Mathieson came home 2nd and Brenden Hall was third in Armageddon

22nd March 2014 - Goldcup Regatta

Sorry for the late write up got a bit busy. A full on day of racing today in great weather and more predicted for tomorrow. Pictures up tomorrow night.

Stokes Valley Collision Repair Matt Morrison Memorial
1st Kent Dunlop "Razors Edge"
2nd Richard Smith "Balistic"
3rd Adam Parker "Heat Seeker"
Qualifying for the 9 boats that fronted turned into the 6 boats that were still running. John Ryan in Dancing Bear Too looked pretty good until breaking down and Ben Ryan in Dancing Bear had a bad misfire that didn't go away or Day. Dean Probyn in Lucky Break qualified on merit but had a water blockage and had to miss the race which gave Jeff Robinson in Bavarian a free pass into the Top 6.
Kent dunlop was fastest at 44sec with Adam Parker back at 48 and Richard Smith, Evan White and Ian Warmington close behind.
First Heat saw kent get to the front and opened up a lead to finish about 200 metres in front of Richard Smith and Adam Parker had a very close battle in Second and were probably counting on Kent to have some Bad luck in Heat 2. Heat two and Kent was driving carefully doing just enough to win and not wanting to push hard and risk a breakage. Richard Smith was driving like a demon and pushed the Green machine very had to try and pressure Kent into a mistake. Adam was back a bit in third and didn't have the legs at the end of the straights to do much about Kent and Richard.

Kapiti Architectural Design
North Island Juniors
1st Alix Macbeth"AB Marine"
2nd Mason Dunlop "Jenny"
3rd Patrick Morris "Little Chief"
Alix drove very well to win Heat one over Mason Dunlop in Jenny and Ethan French in Chick Magnet.
Mason had a very wild ride at one point and came ever so close to tipping the boat over on the straight. Chris Ryan from down south had to drive in Pincoya at the last minute due to the first choice boat not getting on the plane. He had a good battle with Patrick Morris in Little Chief just beating him on the line for 4th. in Heat two Mason managed to just hold off Alix for the win so the title was decided on race times with Alix being the fastest boat. The Juniors were very close in Racing in both heats and drove sensibly.

Quin Buildings Direct Carl Augustine Trophy

A walkover win for Steve Mathieson in Midnight taking his 15th win in the trophy. Alan James was back half a lap and Sean Sanderson in Toxic was a good third place and Tony Arthur in Thunderbird in 4th.

Total Bodyshop Supplies
North Island Formula Three
1st Scott Dennis in "DSR Racing"
2nd Andy Morris in "The Judge"
3rd Andrew Macbeth in "AB Marine"
Scott Denis ran away with the Title as to be expected with the only F3 boat in the race.
Andy Morris in The Judge came home second in heat one but in heat two ran over a log and had to limp home in 4th. AB Marine and On Edge and and Mad Dog Maddi were all dicing with positions in both races and this championship came down to a very close points battle.

2nd March 2014 - Wellington Regatta

North Island GP
1st Adam Parker "Heat Seeker"
2nd Jeff Robinson "Bavarian"
3rd Daniel Hall "Foreno Tapware"
2nd race was run with a bit of rough water on the back stretch but the drivers all took it a bit easy there. Adam was too strong for everyone and one both heats with Jeff in 2nd both times and Daniel 3rd in both heats. Dundeel pulled out in heat one and didn't start the 2nd heat.

They called one of the Clubmans races off after 2 laps as they thought it was a bit rough, was great fun while it lasted though.

Peter Palmer Memorial
1st Adam Parker "Heat Seeker"
2nd Daniel Hall "Foreno Tapware"
3rd Scott Dennis "DSR Racing"

Racing Over for the Day.

1st March 2014 - Wellington Regatta

North Island Procom
1st Adam Parker "Heat Seeker"
2nd Jeff Robinson "Bavarian"
3rd Matt Gaudin "Boatary"
Adam was two good for Jeff winning both Heats comfortably. Matt Gaudin was a lap down in Third in the little Roatray Craft still have a few issues with the fuel feed. Simon Watkins in Typhoon is going through new boat teething troubles and has yet to finish a race.

North Island Mod H
1st Daniel Hall "Foreno Tapware"
2nd Alan James "Dundeel"

Daniel and Alan battled for a few laps before Foreno Tapware pulled away to win both races. Thunderbird is having problems getting the new Honda Motor to get up and going properly and finished both races a lap down.

The clubmans are running on the long course with all 13 boats in the same race. Makes for interesting times for some. Theres also a mixed class racing with a few clubmans and the f3 Tunnel and "Boatary"

2nd March 2014 - Wellington Regatta

Looks like a great day dead calm and sunny. Racing should get under way about 10.30am.

They cancelled the racing for the day due to wind but of course thats just died down now as it does
Try to get the racing in on Sunday

Simon Watkins boat Typhoon ready to go. The ex Captain Manta Boat looks really nice.

Be a good day for racing if only the wind would dissappear. Maybe around 1pm could get some racing in just have to wait and see about 20 or so boats here today.

28th February 2014 - Wellington Regatta

Weather seems ok for tomorrows racing which is supposed to get underway around 10am due to the Tides. Hopefully some good numbers in boats for racing.

23rd February 2014 - New Brighton Masport Cup Regatta 10.30pm

Grand National Hydroplane was won by Mike Harvey in Aquanaut over Cliff Jordan in Summerwine. There were 5 boats at the lake to contest the title but break downs and broken boats took care of three of them out of contention.

Velocity took the top points trophy for the Day.

King of the River was won by Carl Ryan in Whatever driving hard to beat Paul Burtenshaw in Provocative with Chris Henderson in Balls Out 3rd.

The Wind got pretty bad by the end of the afternoon with a few boats deciding not to run.
The mixed class racing was very good however with lots of close racing involved. Clubmans had a great series of racing, the south island boats are pretty competitive and dont mind the rougher water so much. the Junior drivers in particular are getting very fast.

I will try to do a gallery tomorrow.

23rd February 2014 - New Brighton Masport Cup Regatta11.00am

GP 57 Jack Lupton has won the Masport Cup by winning heat two over Cheetah and the Boss in Third. Conditions are still pretty fickle with the breeze and GP57 stated on pole and held on to win with Cheetah chasing very hard. The Boss hung on for third but it wasnt enough to win the Title. Scott Coker was the only other starter driving hard for 4th.

Going to be some more racing today and and early afternoon finish hopefully. Be an update sometime after the finish.

22nd February 2014 - New Brighton Masport Cup Regatta 7.45pm

Miss Aberdeen in testing did a complete flip while turning into the turn landing up right some damage and lost the rudder or turn fin to the lake although they may be able to retrieve it if luck holds.

Jacksons Cranes were kept busy in the morning testing.

South Island Series 3000
1st Richard Kennett "Interceptor"
2nd Richard Smith "Shogun" on time difference from "Brooster"
3rd Brent Frampton "Brooster"

Rage in Heat one of the Masport Cup finished third but blew the back out of the boat and broke some frames so is out for the weekend.

Aquanaut easily won heat one of the South Island GNH over Summer Wine with the Phantom failing to start the race.

Hot 'N' Sticky and The Revolver battled it out in the outboard Racing.

South Island Pro Com.
1st Paul Burtenshaw "Provocative" by 3 seconds on Time difference
2nd Richard Smith "Balistic"
3rd Carl Ryan "Whatever"

22nd February 2014 - New Brighton Masport Cup Regatta 5.00pm

no second heat of the Masport Cup or the Grand National Hydroplane Racing were held today due to the wind.

Everyone else had plenty of racing. The Pro Com and Series 3000 Titles look to be decided on Times so will have to wait for those results to come through.

Well do a sumary tonight.

22nd February 2014 - New Brighton Masport Cup Regatta 12.30pm

There has been a bit of chop with the wind every now and then and in practice the Jason Hagerty GNH boat blue over entering the turn into the wind. He landed upright and even tried to restart but the boat was a little bit damaged and was towed into the shore.

Pro Com Heat 1 was one by Provocative from Balistic, Whatever, Gladiator, Interceptor and Growla were a Lap down.

Masport Cup heat one they didn't need qualifying as only 7 boats were starting the Race.
Cheetah has pulled out of the race and at the start Chill Out and the Phantom failed to make the flag drop. The Boss was under early pressure from Steeler before steeler broke down then Fair Warning was challenging as both boats seem to be driving well in the conditions. Fair Warning was the next to roll to a stop and just left GP57 over half a lap down with Rage just in behind in his little Hydro.

22nd February 2014 - New Brighton Masport Cup Regatta 10.30am

35 Boats have entered this weekends regatta and all classes have at least 5 boats in them which is pretty good.

There is a fickle wind blowing up from time to time but hopefully it wont upset the programme to much.

testing about to start at 10.30am and then Masport Qualifying with a few smaller boats pulling out for various reasons. Will try to do update later on after the finish of the Masport Cup.

21st February 2014 - New Brighton Masport Cup Regatta

3 Clubmans from Rotoiti and Chris Hendersons ModVP outside the Top Hut Pub in Twizel.

This pub has put a bit of support behind the regatta and its would be great to support the Pub Tonight and throughout the Weekend.

Water is looking great with the caretaker saying it should be good all weekend. Going to be some good racing at Twizel.

Great racing by the Formula one boys. The first race was very tight with the 1st 5 boats only separated by a few boat lengths. Promt Parts won from Scott Construction and Rayglass. Heat two saw a reverse grid which really makes the racing very exciting and Derek Macadam led for lap one before Jeff Price took over the lead and ran well to win from Anthony Robinson and Malcolm Jamieson. Jeff and Luke Sharp were tied on points and the race times were added together to give Jeff the overall win by 10 seconds 3rd place O/A was also decide on time with Julian Stilwell taking 3rd over Anthony Robinson.

8th January 2014 - Jack Ryan NZPBA Life Member
From Tony Hall & John Ryan(words) & Lester Connor (photos).

Jack standing beside a Miss Cathie at the Estuary, with a 2.5 liter Daimler V8 in it. This boat did 101 mph on the Estuary in 1966.
(some of these images will open to bigger versions in a new window if you click on them)

Jack driving Miss Cathie, with a brand new Sunbeam Alpine in it, at the Estuary in New Brighton in 1964.

Jack Driving a Grey Nurse racing alongside Arnold Johnson in Atom 11 at Lake Forsyth in 1963.
This boat was the original Bel Air, that Peter Knight Snr first raced. Jack had spent some time working on repairing Peter Snr's Bel Air the hydro & as he had no boat to race at that stage, somehow he ended up with this Grey Nurse.

Jack at Lake Rotoiti in 1982 with Mainland Miss, This is probably the boat Jack is most remembered for.

An interesting note here is that Jack had not intended to go racing at all & was a local life guard. He was biking home one Saturday, when he heard Don Hall's Tempest 5 running on the estuary in about 1953. ( about 60 mph.) He biked into the event & was so amazed by the shape & the way Tempest 5 was running, he decided that when he could, he would have a go at racing. The rest is History.

6th January 2014 - Nationals

Only two weeks out to the Nationals and There are 60 Boats entered and some of these boats have different drivers in various classes. The long range weather forecast is looking great. All the classes are looking very good. Spectator entry is absolutely Free and there will be plenty of refreshments available at Lakeside.

Please send your Drivers Profile to the Regatta Announcer Steve Howard at Email: steve@lakesideproperties.co.nz So that Steve can read out sponsors and boat details during your race.
