1st December 2013 - Lake Dunstan Regatta (4.00pm)

The Boss had a moment in the 2nd heat of the GP race going over backwards and ending upside down. Raymond was ok as his cell was sound and on Oxygen. Bit of work needed on the damaged boat though and may be out for awhile. Accident happened on the run to turn one.

Ken lupton will probably be awarded the title for winning heat one with Raymond second and ARB 3rd.

Mod VP went to Andy Morris in The Judge with Cadman Irving getting second form Andrew Railton in Mad Dog Third.

Formula One was great racing with the reverse grid making it interesting. They will have there points on a facebook page

Bit of debris in the river in the morning slowed things up but they got through a lot of racing today.

30th November 2013 - Lake Dunstan Regatta (9.30pm)

Very Long day but some very good racing in the races that did get under way. Wind had a bit of a say in how things played out. 3 GP boats showed up and there Title will be run on Sunday along with the Mod VP Title. There just wasn't enough time to run those titles today with the delay that some boats had in arriving.

Formula One South Island Title was run today and the racing was top notch. Malcolm Jamieson in his new Boat went pretty quick and Anthony Robinson was ironing out the bugs in his new Tunnel. Prompt Parts won race one from Scott Construction and Lone Wolf. in Race two it was Malcolm Jamieson and Anthony Robinson making the most of the reverse grid start to hold an advantage over Luke sharp and Julian Stilwell whom swapped places a number of times before Luke crossed the line ahead but then had some problem before taking the next turn. don't knew how that effects the result because at the same time Richard Sommerville tipped over at the top turn bringing out the red flag. Driver and boat were ok.

The F1 Powerboat Tour Round tomorrow should be very interesting to watch.

oops this wasn't a title race as that's at Twizel still very good racing though

South Island Grand National Hydroplane had a very good field of Boats and Miss Aberdeen lead from the front in race one beating home Aquanaut and Renegade. The Phantom went great in race one to come home 4th. In heat two The phantom starting on the inside either got cut off at the first turn or found it a bit rough and took a wide turn and Miss Aberdeen found itself going wide as a result and lost ground on Aquanaut and Renegade, and while Miss Aberdeen. tried hard it couldnt pass Renegade and finished third very good race though and great to see 3 very quick GNH racing closely.

The flattie's had a couple of races with the ski boats the F3 and the old Jacal F1 boat. there were some good racing but a few breakdowns.

Clubmans had 3 races two pole boat starts and a le mans beech start type race. No one seemed keen on driving my boat so i was driving it. Some keen new drivers and lots more boats on the water. The Judge and Mad Dog were flying and the boats to beat on the day.

Hopefully tomorrow will be an early start and all the races will get done.

Should get some official results for the titles tomorrow.

Gallery when i get home not too many pictures though, monday or tuesday night.

30th November 2013 - Lake Dunstan Regatta (9.30am)

Going to be a late start somewhere around 11am - 12 noon.

9 Formula One tunnels and an F3 are here for the racing so that should be very good. 10 Clubmans a couple of ski boats 2 mod h and 5 gnh Hydroplanes. and some GP boats may be here?

Will update later at night.

29th November 2013 - Lake Dunstan Regatta

Shaping up to be a good regatta by the looks. two boats traveled down from Auckland and two from Manawatu so they are pretty keen to have a go. couple of Wanganui GP boats here as well.

Not sure what the weathers like tomorrow but its pretty damp here at the moment.

Quite a few Boats in Town seems that most of the New Brighton Boats are here. be good to see The Phantom back on the water with new owners and also Low Blow has a new owner.

Will try an update during the day and later at night

28th November 2013 - A Bit More History
From Tony Hall (words) & Lester Connor (photos).

Aquanaut (Bill Patterson) this was powered by an Allison W.W.11 aircraft engine.
(all these images will open to bigger versions in a new window if you click on them)

Red Head & this photo really shows the stepped front of the hydro working well on the craft.
In the background is Mistic Miss.

The first Bel Air & this is important as most people only remember Peter Knight Snr driving Hydro's.
This is the boat that often stayed at my house in Blenheim when I was only a kid. I remember being allowed to sit in it & thinking that when I grow up,
I want a boat just like this one!! I can't have grown up yet, as I still race a hydro.

This says publication unknown, but I think this was in Sea Spray Magazine, I was there the day that both this boats sunk in Picton.
I was also there when Len Southward, said to leave the boat on the bottom of the harbor. The actual reason was he had arranged to go fishing on the
Monday. So the boat was lifted from the bottom by a Harbor Board launch / tug on the Tuesday.

This is a photo of Lester Connor's father's boat being turned over at the Estuary in Christchurch. The Estuary was too shallow to turn boats over, so they
were towed in upside down & then turned over.

23rd November 2013 - Training Clubday Ngakuru
Briefly Today
Awesome day out at the lake 6 new junior Drivers in Clubmans and a few in the other classes all enjoyed a great day of relaxed testing and training races.

The one point that marred the day was the unfortunate collision between to clubmans while milling around at the start. This was in the experienced Clubmans Race which was rather embarrassing but a great lesson was taught to all in attendance.

Tomorrows weather is looking great as well so everyone's looking forward to a great day.

5 hydros an f3 tunnel, two series 3000 including the return of the Gaudin ?Rotary Boat and 9 clubmans all up and everyone bar two had an awesome day.

Well upload some pictures tomorrow late night.

Cambridge/Waikato Entry Form

14th November 2013 - A bit of History
From Tony Hall & Lester Connor.

Pelorus Jack driven by W Buckman as the Boat won its 6th Masport Cup. And the Inspiration for the Pelorus Jack Trophy
(all these images will open to bigger versions in a new window if you click on them)

Red Head, a stepped Hydro.

Pelorus Jack was still racing in the early 50s.

Miss Print (Doug Cameron) which did 149mph in the 70s.
Miss Print was the best presented Hydroplane, I have ever seen. This boat won the Pelorus Jack cup about 4 times in the 70s.
An earlier Flat bottom Miss Print, is still on the bottom of Lake Karapiro, from memory this went down in about 1969.

D. Hall Tempest V also won it several times in the early 50s.

In the 60s Tru Jen came along & a few years latter Aquanaut, a flattie type with a similar Allionsion engine to Tru Jen. These boats dominated the Pelorus Jack Cup for over 3 decades.

Juella II a 1650cc Ryan Craft from the 60s & 70s (John Stokes. N.B. Club.)
At one of the early Nationals 103 boats had entered & Juella won The 1650 class, the 3000cc class, the 5000cc class & the Unlimited flattie class.
John did this through pure reliability, this I don't think has ever happened since.
I was there the day that Juella finally fell to bits in the late 70s & John then retired from racing, but stayed involved for many years afterwards.
His brother Peter Stokes, kept racing Brer Fox till the 80s.

13th November 2013 - Rotoiti Regatta
The Rotoiti Regatta was run in excellent conditions, was very well run & there were no crashes.
There were 18 Clubmans, 5 F1s. 4 G.Ps, 1 G.N. 4 Modified Hydroplanes & 2 Ski Boats.

The Clubmans raced in two classes as there so many.
On Saturday they raced for the South Island Title in two fields of 8, with the place getters being picked on times.
This was unusual, but it worked quite well & put all the boats in.
2 extra little boats showed up on Sunday, one of these was a jet boat & the owners had a great day.
The Clubmans raced in both Scratch & Handicap races over the 2 days.
With at least 1 all in handicap. (17 boats).
By the end of the racing, there were 3 that were really showing out, The Legend, AB Marine & The Judge.

The Modified Hydroplanes put on some good racing at the start.
Rage won the first heat of the S.I. Title & was clearly leading the 2nd, when a fire in the Turbo caused a D.N.F.
Dundeel was running really well in heat 2, but did not run so well in the replay after Rage stopped.
This left Thunderbird to finish well & take the title, Brent has done a lot of work on this boat & it is running very well.
Rage did try to race again, but the Turbo would not play ball.

The G.N. Miss Aberdeen ran well until racing against Warwick it damaged the back of the boat.
This boat has recently come in from the U.S.A. ( 2 Nas car motors) & will certainly help the G.N. fields.

Cheetah did an engine, but did do some great laps before this happened.
Annihilator Race boat also did good laps, but did not run on Sunday.
The Boss ran strong both days & put on a great show, winning the Pelorus Jack Trophy.
This Trophy was donated by the Brownlee Family in about 1928 & was first raced for by 3 whale chasers,
Tory Chic, Tory Queen & The Pelorus Jack. The Pelorus Jack then become the first real race boat in N.Z. & defended the trophy well up until it finally retired.
( I think in the late 30s.)
Warwick's boat Annihilator ran well both days & put on a real show for the crowd, he now has it turning much better & was very quick.

All 5 F1 boats ran well, the racing was exceptional, with Scott Construction being the quickest over the two days, but Lone Wolf, Promt Parts, The Chase & KS Builders all put on a good show & were going very fast. Derrick just got quicker & quicker over the two days in The Chase & by the end of this season, will be a real force.

That was the biggest crowd I have seen at Rotoiti, since the 70s.
So it will a case of getting more race boats to future Rotoiti events.
It was great to see 8 Boats there from the Manawatu Club.
