9th December 2014 - Classic Outboard Hydro
Ray with fellow competitors Jim Maitland (centre) & Jack Keig.
(some of these images will open to bigger versions in a new window if you click on them)

“The Australasian 0350 cc O/B hydro Kilo Record of 71 mph was set in 1963 by Downbeat owned by freezing worker Ray Prattley on the NBPBC Estuary. At the time it was said that Downbeat (ii) was the only boat of this class to exceed 70mph outside of the USA. Ray had 2 hydros, both Hal Kelly designs, and raced in the 1st half of the 1960s. Ray played piano & named his boats ‘Downbeat’ after the US jazz magazine of the same name. Ray was great friends and rival of fellow Ashburtonites Jack Keig son John, John still holder of the NZ 0500cc record set in 1967. There was quite an awareness of the small group of Ashburton O/B Hydro racers in the town, they featured consistently in the local news it seems. The record-holding Downbeat was one of Kelly’s Jupiter designs & Ray experienced the limitations of that (9 foot 10 inch) design by being repeatedly thrown out of it. Ray & John Keig in virtually identical boats rolled in the same corner competing for a championship title in Aviemore. Ray tried to circumvent Downbeat’s design limitations by lying prone in the boat rather than kneeling in order to alter the weight distribution and centre of gravity of the boat. The changes were not entirely successful, Ray injured his hand in another flip & handed over driving duties to another Ashburton resident Don Davies. Ray retired from racing at the end of the 1964 and remained great friends with Jack Keig. Of the four racers only John is still alive. Downbeat no longer exists, but all three of the Keig hydros do.”
