History:

The Lakeland Powerboat Club is proud to been an active Club in the community for over 70 years, having held a regatta on Lake Maraetai at Mangakino for most of those years. The community on a whole enjoys the event and leisure boaties enjoy watching others out on the lake. The Club runs the event with members coming forward to volunteer their time to help with the jobs that need to be done. These events cannot be achieved without the financial support of the community, and a small bunch of boating enthusiasts. The members believe in the club and the good times and fun, family time you can have when boys, and girls, the noise and their big toys get together. We organise a Regatta every year in Mangakino, a place that is always a favourite with the other boat clubs and well patronised

The Club’s objectives are to foster and promote the sport of powerboat racing to the local community, in a fun and safe way and to get together with like minded people for the adventure and excitement that comes with powerboat racing. We encourage the younger ones into the sport with a Clubman Class to get them started and we have found that this class can also be raced by some oldies who still enjoy the sport just don’t want to go as fast.

We have had dwindling members over the years, as can happen for a lot of Clubs these days, but still we keep going because we believe in what we do. Regattas need money to run successfully and there are some costs that are a must, mainly health and safety. The local community always enjoy having the boaties in town, who also stay and use local businesses and services.

CAMPING: If you wish to camp on the reserve in the area where there is the playground, this is a privilege that has been granted to allow our club to use. The conditions are:

  • NO DRINKING ALCOHOL: If you wish to do so you will need to go up and camp on the Marae reserve which is only up the road from the lake. Remember if we don’t respect that condition then in future we will not be given the right to camp there again.
  • RUBBISH: Bags or bins will be provided. You must use them or take the Rubbish home with you.
  • CLEANING UP: When you pack up your tent can you please make sure you remove all pegs from the ground. This has become an issue for Taupe District council for the grounds people that mow the lawns.
