Hydro Thunder Series
Well the weather may have robbed us of the final in Taupo but it didn't stop David Alexander winning the round and taking over the series lead.
With round one proving costly to so many teams, the title is looking like a three way battle.
Ken Lupton , David Alexander and the ever consistent Scott Coker have a point gap that
will make the racing at Round three Lake Karapiro one not to miss.

History Wednesday
The Saga of " Wild Bill Cantrell"
Born in West Point, Kentucky, in 1908, he spent much of his early life in nearby Louisville.
Not much is known of Bill’s childhood, except that his family experienced dire poverty.
But this didn’t prevent him from rising above his humble circumstances to achieve the pinnacle of fame in his chosen field of power boat competition.
Pinpointing the exact origin of Bill’s long career in boat racing is difficult even with Cantrell’s help.
He began competing sometime around 1924.
As the story goes, he was christened "Wild Bill" when an Outboard he was racing went out of control on the Ohio River and crashed through anchor chains and moored spectator vessels.

NEW BRIGHTON CLUB DAY REPORT
It was a good start to our season with seven boats in attendance.
We took to the water at about 10:30 for our junior training and observation sessions followed up with a shake down for our V8 skiff boys.
We then sent the skiff’s along with a lone ski boat out for a four lap race.
A good battle between Davie Norris in Full Throttle and Josh Ryan in Provocative with the lead changing several times before Davie taking the win.
William Ryan in Ginger Bear was showing some impressive pace until a drop in oil pressure caused him to withdraw.
Good to see Jeff Hauschild back behind the wheel of a race boat again in his mint 1750 Bullet and we look forward to seeing him back in a top running flattie with the purchase of Miss Print VII.
Unfortunately the day was cut short with a surprise southerly wind change turning our calm lake into a sea of whitecaps.
We then proceeded with a BBQ and social gathering with a good attendance.
A little bit of bad luck for our newest member Miss Lily Weir and her new junior boat having some gearbox shifter issues.
She is one keen young lass and I’m sure she will be ready to go in a fortnight’s time.

We are slowly grouping these photos into albums for the respective boats or drivers.
The two headings to look for on the website page are-
-Photo-stream which has all the photos uploaded so far
- and Albums which has the ones created so far.
Another two to three hundred photos are left to be sorted, so check back over the next few months as we continue the
sorting out.The link is now also listed under Galleries on the website.

The introduction this year of the first ever Junior Executive members is a milestone for our sport.
Having that link between the youth of our sport and the top table is so important to allow the younger drivers a voice.
Our first two elected Junior Executive members Scott Watson North Island and Jacob Knoef South Island
will be a real credit to our sport.
Below Scott is presented with his Executive badge by Nzpba president Mike Wotton,
Sadly Jacob couldn't be present this weekend we will post his badge presentation asap.

With winter really hitting hard now in NZ, here is a little history from one of the worlds few purpose built water race tracks.
Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park
This facility opened as Firebird International Raceway in 1983 and hosted the NHRA's Arizona Nationals. It held one IMSA GT race, in 1987. Due to its warm climate, it is a popular winter testing spot for NHRA and IndyCar teams. In December 1992, Three-time Formula One World Driving Champion Ayrton Senna famously tested an IndyCar at this facility (then still called Firebird International Raceway) with Team Penske. Senna was intrigued, but eventually decided to stay in Formula One.
The venue currently hosts an array of auto enthusiast events, such as the NHRA Nationals, Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, Lucas Oil Regional Off-Road Racing Series, Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing, Red Bull Global Rally Cross, Bug-o-Rama, Formula Drift, Friday Night Drags, Drift & Drag Nights.
The 600 acre multi-use facility is currently used by dragsters, monster trucks, off-road races, and drag boats. Some of the biggest brands in motorsports, including Lucas Oil, Coca-Cola, Carquest and Ford have sponsored the circuit.
The park includes four race tracks: a 1/4 mile NHRA sanctioned drag strip; 1.6 mile road course; a 10-turn 1.25 mile road course; and a 1.1 mile road course, incorporating 11 tight turns and a 3/8 mile straight-away. It also features a 2.4 mile IHBA- and APBA-sanctioned oval lake.
On February 24, 1985, in one of the most chilling accidents ever seen at the lake, Drag Boat Racer Sunny Moon was nearly killed after jumping out of his drag boat when he jammed his throttle going around 160 MPH, which launched into the air after hitting the shore and exploded into flames after slamming into a row of high tension power lines. Moon was knocked unconscious after hitting the water at 160 MPH, but amazingly, he suffered only minor injuries in the accident. The accident was filmed by cameraman Terry Fox.
For more info on this purpose built water race way check out Wild Horse Park

The Day of the Cell is upon us.
Winter is finally upon us, so to help fight the boredom of no racing,
Here is a fantastic article link on Chris Hodges ( middle in picture).
A true pioneer in our sport, for many older fans and drivers the name will be well known,
but to many of our younger and newer members the name is one to remember.

Official announcement
2021 UIM Grand Prix Hydroplane World Championship in New Zealand
A meeting took place on the 3rd May 2020 with members of the NZGP Drivers club and Hydro Thunder event organisers to discuss the viability of running the 2021 UIM Grand Prix Hydroplane World Championship.
At the conclusion of this meeting the decision was made to postpone the event until 2022 due to the current events happening around the world.
The impact of COVID-19 on international travel and the financial strains at this point is an unknown and feel in the best interest of the event and the sport that postponing will only make it stronger.
We would like to ensure that there are no barriers that will prevent overseas entries from making the journey to what will be a great event.
We are currently putting together a proposed programme for the up and coming HydroThunder series in the hope that we are clear to race and are able to give the fans both here in NZ and around the world a good show leading to the 2022 World event.
On behalf of the NZGP Drivers Club and the Hydrothunder events team, thank you for your understanding and we look forward to updating you on our proposed calendar.
For any further enquiry please contact denise @accelerationonwater.co.nz
Thanks Denise

Cambridge Waikato Regatta News Release.
Fellow boat racers,
Due to a combination of factors that have conspired against us it is with regret that I have to announce that the regatta due to be run on the 15th and 16th of February at Blue Lake Rotorua has been canceled.
Unfortunately at the time of writing we do not have sufficient entries to warrant proceeding with the regatta and the Cambridge/Waikato powerboat club has made the tough decision to cancel as we consider it is not in either the clubs or the sports interest to continue.
I thank all of those who have put in considerable effort in the organization leading up to the event and trust that competitors will be understanding of our decision.
Yours in racing

WEDNESDAY KNOW YOUR RULE BOOK
This weeks know your rule book brings us to Racing rules page 32.
HANDICAP RACING
29. Except where a race for each class is used to determine lap times all boats must be timed over the whole course for one lap prior to racing to establish a time trial, times must be posted on a blackboard outside control office. All boats must be timed in every lap in every race, total time only will not be accepted, copies of time sheets for all handicap races must be made available to the Liaison Steward if requested by the Steward or Driver. Time sheets to be retained by the Club for 30 days after race. An allowance of one second per lap will be made in all handicap races and may be used during the race, but the driver must not exceed his/her time trial by more than 2 seconds in any one lap in any race. In the event of a boat being disqualified on total time or exceeding 2 seconds on any one lap the driver must be furnished with details if he/she desires to. If a boat is disqualified, it shall be rehandicapped on the basis of lap times recorded during the race. The faster lap time shall then replace the original lap time. Late arrivals must nominate a time trial time which can then only be altered under the conditions of this rule. (a) Where racing is conducted over a course which includes an incomplete lap additional provision shall be made to time each boat over such lap within time trials and during racing.
(b) A maximum of fifteen (15) boats shall compete in any handicap race. If necessary the field will be divided preferably by class, or if this is impracticable then by handicap time.
30. All handicaps shall be given in minutes and seconds.
31. It will be incumbent on all drivers to obtain their handicaps from the call steward prior to the start of all handicap races.
(a) Except in the event of a protest the official placings of each class shall be made known prior to the start of the next event for that class.

Now That's Different !
One of the first gasoline powerboats to hold The World Speed Record was, the HD-4 or Hydrodome number 4.
HD-4 was an early research hydrofoil watercraft developed by the scientist Alexander Graham Bell. Designed and built at the Bell Boatyard on Bell's Beinn Bhreagh estate near Baddeck, Nova Scotia.
Bell and his associate Frederick W. "Casey" Baldwin studied the work of the Italian inventor Enrico Forlanini and began testing models based on his hydrofoil designs. Bell with his chief engineer Baldwin began hydrofoil experiments in the summer of 1908. During Bell's world tour of 1910–1911, Bell and Baldwin met with Forlanini in Italy, where they rode in his hydrofoil boat over Lake Maggiore. Baldwin described it as being as smooth as flying.
On returning to Bell's large laboratory and boatyard at his Beinn Bhreagh estate near Baddeck, Nova Scotia, they experimented with a number of designs, culminating in HD-4. In 1913, Dr. Bell hired Walter Pinaud, a Sydney yacht designer and builder as well as the proprietor of Pinaud's Yacht Yard in Westmount to work on the pontoons of HD-4. Pinaud soon took over the Bell Boatyard at Beinn Bhreagh. Pinaud's experience in boat-building enabled him to make useful design changes to HD-4. After the First World War, work began again on HD-4. Bell's report to the U.S. Navy permitted him to obtain two 350 brake horsepower (260 kW) Liberty V-12 engines in July 1919.
On September 9, 1919, on the Bras d'Or Lakes, at Baddeck, HD-4 set a world marine speed record of 70.86 miles per hour (114.04 km/h), that stood for almost a year until being beaten by Gar Wood in Miss America.
