The Modified Hydroplane Class is one of the largest classes in the NZPBA. Powered by Automotive engines up to 3000 cc, there are no hull restrictions as far as size and weight go. The hulls are between 16 to 18 ft, depending on the hulls age and engine size. Construction is timber frames and fibreglass over ply. Carbon fibre is also starting to appear in the later boats. With top speeds of over 120 mph (195 kph) this is an exciting and affordable class to compete in. With the car and spares imports from Japan there are a lot of great 2 Ltr engines available and a number of boats in Mod H are making use of them with good results. Mod H are also able to compete in Grand National and Grand Prix classes.
The club was formed 13 years ago due to mainly because of the concern of a group of drivers racing in the old B and E Classes. They were rather concerned about the direction the sport was going and the likely affect it was going to have on their type of boats. The three members whom formatted the club namely Peter McLeod, Nigel Zander and Peter Dudson polled all boats racing in these classes and came up with a format and name for the new class as opposed to that being proposed by the NZPBA at that time. The members at their first AGM set out the aims of the club and of which they are still used today. The club has it's AGM and prizegiving if possible in the last weekend of August.
